Description
Erect shrub to 3 m high.

Branches often purplish; glabrous except for hairs on new growth.
Habitat
Well drained soils in moist and riparian forests. Partial shade. Pioneer plant regenerating quickly after fires and in cleared areas.
Comments
Egg-shaped, edible orange-red berry, green and poisonous when immature.
