Welcome Circle and Climate Ready Garden
Our Climate Ready Garden was created to provide a showcase of plants that look great at the peak of summer with minimal additional water. The sculptures, created by Louise Costa and Les Pelle reflect the wetlands – with cumbungi fringes and lily pad shade structures. Aunty Joanne Honeysett worked with Lou to create the welcome circle – the first ceremonial circle to welcome visitors to country on Taungurung land.
Daanak (Coolamon) Walking Trail
Walking our Daanak, (Coolamon) walking trail, you have the opportunity to hear Taungurung Traditional Owners through the QR code soundscape and learn about the seasonal changes and bush foods in the Arboretum.
Grasslands
Grassy Woodlands were once common across Victoria. These days, a tiny fraction remain, and most are a relic from the diverse, rich grasslands they were in the past. These landscapes evolved with active management from Traditional Owners, burning country at the right time to ensure it was healthy.
Here at the Arb, we have been actively managing our grassland since 2015. We have worked alongside Taungurung Traditional Owners – looking to past practices and techniques and adapting them to the modern day challenges. Our grassland is continually evolving and progressively becoming more diverse each year, and with that diversity, birds, skinks, insects and possums are finding the Arb and calling it home.
Canoeing and Fishing
Prior to school holiday times, the Euroa Arboretum dam is stocked with Rainbow Trout, providing an opportunity for a quiet fish on a nice sunny day. It’s also large enough to launch your canoe and go for a paddle around. It was recently stocked for the September 2022 holidays.
Wetlands
Interested in creating a habitat rich dam or wetland? Come and visit our wetlands or chain of ponds. These 2 created areas, utilising water run off from the Hume Freeway, are havens for invertebrates that in turn feed fish, birds, frogs and reptiles. The wet/dry cycle is critical to maintain diversity, and even when it looks dead, seeds and eggs are sitting in the soil, ready for their opportunity to hatch or germinate.
Art Works
Local artists have rallied together to give their impression of the Euroa Arboretum using metal. These series of panels are on display adjacent to the picnic shelter and depict the Euroa Arboretum – from its history to its vision. They are well worth a visit.
Birding
Pack the binoculars and see how many species you can spot. Vulnerable species such as the Diamond Firetail spend large amounts of time in the Arboretum Grasslands and are often seen year round at the Art Wall and the Retail Nursery.
Take a look at our eBird listings and click on the bird names to see detailed information and photos. Here’s some of the species spotted here at the Arb: Black-Chinned Honeyeater, Blue-Faced Honeyeater, Olive-Backed Oriole, Purple-crowned Lorikeet. It’s certainly a top birding site and there’s a bird-hide by the water.
