Seedbank
Futureproofing with the Goulburn Broken Indigenous Seedbank
‘Climate and nature-based solutions won’t work without seed.’ —Chris Cumming, GBCMA
What is an indigenous seedbank?
To futureproof our natural environment, we need to collect, produce and store indigenous seed so it is available when we need it. Seedbanks do just that.
A native seedbank:
• is a vital safeguard to restore degraded landscapes
• builds resilience against future natural disasters
• helps combat and mitigate climate change, habitat destruction and the catastrophic wildfires and floods that devastate our landscapes and wild seed populations.
Project objectives
• Secure a diverse collection of native seed for large-scale landscape restoration and carbon-abatement projects in north-east and central Victoria.
• Double existing seed supply and develop tailored native seed mixes for targeted projects.
• Build suitable seed processing and storage facilities and convert 20 hectares of farmland to native seed production sites.
• Empower locals, including First Nations people, to secure wider ranges of native seed for biodiversity and carbon sequestrations projects.
Why the Euroa Arboretum?
We successfully manage one of only three seedbanks in Victoria.
We have been operating for over 20 years, are leading professionals in the field of landscape restoration and have already cultivated strong partnerships with local stakeholders.
Large-scale landscape restoration is our best chance to fight climate change and a purpose-built facility is required to produce and process seed at the scale we need, and target fragile, rare and adaptive plant species.
How can you help?
This is a real way to commit to a better future for our native plants, habitats and landscapes and the people and animals that live within them. You can play a vital part.
• Make a gift – gifts of all sizes are greatly appreciated. Please visit the donations page on our website.
• Become an affiliated member of the Euroa Arboretum. This is $300 and you will be listed on our website as a sponsor in perpetuity.
• Leave us a gift in your will. Information about how to do this is on our website.
• Run a fundraising event with your community.
Seed Collection
-
- The GBIS mission is to provide genetically healthy seed to support landscape restoration activities.
-
- We strive for improving landscape health and resilience of biodiversity, especially in the face of climate change.
Seed Cleaning
-
- Once collected, seed is cleaned, batched and stored ready for use.
-
- There are many cleaning techniques for different species and is time consuming work to achieve the highest quality.
Seed Storage
-
- We provide quality, diverse and genetically healthy seed.
-
- Tests seed to ensure viability.
-
- Supplies and stores a diverse range of indigenous species for the catchment.
Supplying climate adapted, genetically diverse seed for large scale restoration goals.
Euroa Arboretum Inc, (manager of the Goulburn Broken Indigenous Seedbank), is seeking a financial commitment of $2.5 million for Stage 1 to develop large scale Seed Production Areas and Seedbank facilities for the Goulburn Broken Catchment.
Current seed availability and supply will only meet an estimated 10% of the Victorian State Government Biodiversity Strategy 2037 vision and goals.
Urgent planning and substantial investment are required if large scale landscape restoration is to occur.
