Moth Tracker

We need your help in keeping an eye out for Bogong Moths! If you think you spot one, add it to Moth Tracker. It’s quick and easy!

Each spring, Mountain Pygmy-possums wake up from hibernation, hungry for nutritious Bogong Moths to eat. Bogong Moths usually fly to the possums’ mountain home in the billions, but fewer moths have arrived over the last few years, causing additional stress on the already Critically Endangered Mountain Pygmy-possum. The tiny, but mighty, Bogong Moth was added to the IUCN Endangered species list in 2021 with concerns rising for the long-term survival of this amazing Australian species.

We need your help. If you see a Bogong Moth, upload the photo and location to @ZoosVictoria’s Moth Tracker. This will help scientists better understand if the moths will make it to the alpine mountains this year. Learn more: https://www.zoo.org.au/moth-tracker/

Campaign period: 1 September – 31 December 2026. This is an annual campaign during the Bogong Moth’s spring migration, however, Bogong Moths also make an equally impressive return migration in autumn, and the Moth Tracker website is active for sighting submissions year-round.
